This great tutorial takes us through the building process for a 220 gallon rainwater collection system. The video is very well put together from start to finish with fantastic, clear instructions and images. This is one easy DIY project that allows you to tap into a free resource!

For much of our domestic and industrial water use it is totally unnecessary to use drinking water. You can do your bit for the environment and it will save you some money on the water bills too!

Rainwater is better for your plants than tap water as it doesn’t have added chemicals. Harvested rainwater can also be used in the home for washing and flushing toilets. It works well for cleaning windows or your car as it is soft water and doesn’t leave marks when it dries. A low-cost small pump can be added to the output to raise it up to a higher level for use in the home.

In the UK, for example, the last winter was the wettest since records began – that’s around 200 years ago! Whether climate change is due to human activity or not, extremes of weather seem to be becoming more common in many parts of the world so it is helpful to be able to harvest water for use when the rain isn’t so abundant!

A lot of garden plants require regular watering and yields can suffer greatly if a dry spell comes at a critical point in their growth – particularly when the plants are young or have recently been transplanted. If you want your garden to grow well, sooner or later you’ll have to water – having a large supply of rainwater to hand could save a huge amount of effort!

There are some small modifications that can make this barrel system even better – it’s worth a look through the comments for tips and there are a lot of these projects now online so look out for further updates and improvements! Here are a couple of good one: make sure to use dark coloured barrels to avoid algae growing in you water and consider positioning the manifold below or at the back of the barrels to avoid it getting damaged – those pipes are quite fragile!

It’s really helpful to create systems that will allow us to manage the changes that are happening around us – as a species we seem to be doing our best to upset the balance of nature so anything we can do to alleviate extremes is definitely welcome!

Incredibly, in some USA states it is illegal to harvest rainwater even on a small scale! – this is insanity and we need to take action to stop our basic freedoms being taken away!

Ok, here’s the video:
