This inspirational video features 19-year-old Mark King – an ingenious and ambitious young inventor who built his own experimental electric car from scratch. His reasons for the project were a) to find a way around the costs associated with parking and b) to “go green” and make something minimally polluting. The car cost $2400 to build and was 9 months of dedicated work.
This video is a few years old now and electric cars are now becoming more commonplace – but the greatest takeaway of this video for the “off-gridder” is not so much the car itself, but the “personal transformation” that occurred as a result of his commitment to this project. There’s a life lesson here.
King admits in the interview that when he started, he had no idea what he was doing, but simply through commitment, determination to overcome obstacles and “being a person who finishes things”, the amount he learned was immense. You can see the “mindset” of the inventor here. Decides he wants to do it. Doesn’t let not knowing how to do it stop him. He just does it anyway and learns what he needs to learn along the way.
People often shy away from projects because they cannot envisage the end and are put of by what are seen as obstacles. However, commitment to the process is what leads to knowledge. If you never begin, you will never learn how it is done. Simply by starting, you will have opened the door to learning and to overcoming that which you previously had no idea how to overcome.
This reminds me of Henry Ford’s famous statement when his engineers told him that the V8 engine was impossible: “Do it anyway”.
