Titanium is a high-strength metal that is used principally in the aerospace industry, for both airframes and engines, as well as in the defense industry, for spacecraft and missiles. The metal’s lightweight strength and ability to withstand extreme temperatures are the main factors why aircraft and fighter jet manufacturers rely on it. If the metal is strong and light, is it also bulletproof?

In this video, internet personality Matt Carriker of YouTube channel Demolition Ranch, tried to find out if titanium can repel bullets when his staff received a one-fourth inch chunk of titanium from Tactical Advantage Armory. Matt did not disappoint in his field test as he fired an entire arsenal of ammunition at the slab of titanium.

Matt first fired two rounds of 22 LR rimfire from a pistol, which only made a splat against the block. Then, he proceeded to use a 9mm, which he described as a real caliber. It also failed to penetrate the titanium and just produced a dent barely. A 44 Magnum delivered the same result.

The previous failures did not affect Matt’s persistence, so he opted for a 400-grain bullet which he applied to a Henry rifle. Again, the bullet had no effect on the metal. When he tried a 325-grain Hornady LeveRevolution round which was predicted to go deeper, it had not much effect as the 400-grainer. A similar round from a 30-30-160 grain tipped bullet was also a meh!

With few weapons left, Matt resorted to using more powerful guns including a 12 gauge, one-ounce slug, a 7.62 x 39 FMJ from an AK rifle, and a 5.56 NATO. The first one was impressive while the second was disappointing. The last one did the best but was far from penetrating the titanium.

There came the 50-caliber Barrett which nearly tore through the entire block. The 50 BMG is so powerful that it moved a telephone pole back a couple of feet in the process.

So is titanium bulletproof as shown in the video? In most cases, it looks like it’ll resist most any bullet in its tracks. So stop worrying. It sounds like your titanium jumpsuit should keep you safe unless you are facing some extreme resistance. However, given enough rounds with a super high-power weapon loaded with armor piercing ammunition, titanium can be penetrated.
