Amazing news for alternative energy: You can now install a wind turbine that can power your whole house for a one time cost of $750 – and the turbine should last “a lifetime”. This cheap wind turbine was developed by Arun George and Anoop George who are founders of Indian clean energy company Avant Garde Innovations (AGI). It can generate five-kilowatt power per day, which is enough for a small household.
Arun and Anoop birthed the startup with three goals including elimination of energy poverty, reduction of dependence on the power grid, and realization of energy independence. They first installed a wind turbine at Vettucaud Parish Church in Trivandrum in Kerala. That prototype is highly capable for power capacities of 300kW or even higher. The $750 turbine can be installed on any rooftop and requires a minimal low-wind speed of just 1.5 meters per second.
The company’s affordable wind turbines are ideal for not only residential use but can be applied to commercial and agricultural purposes. They can potentially supply entire villages. In a country where daily blackouts are just an ordinary part of life, the wind turbines can help make the country’s energy crisis a thing of a past. The duo claims that their product will not even slightly impact the ecological balance.
The wind turbines are suitable for remote villages where bringing electricity is obstructed due to the high cost of infrastructure. Avant Garde perfectly situates itself in a country where putting in the power lines over long distance remains out of reach financially.
Small wind turbines are mainly needed for personal use in rural communities. Avant Garde’s Gyroscopic Axial Flux Turbine is described as a multipurpose turbine that can be used for hydel turbines and tidal turbines. The device is also capable of being converted as an automobile motor. The vastly scalable product can range from installations of wind turbines ranging from one kilowatt to over 300 kilowatts.
Rooftop solar panels are the usual go-to technology to power homes with renewable energy. Avant Garde’s turbines make wind power more accessible to more people. Arun shares that their device can produce power that will offer free electricity for 20 years. Frequent maintenance is less due to the turbine’s compact design.
AGI is backed by several prominent corporate and private investors from India and overseas including Sequoia Capital and Keiretsu Forum. Sequoia Capital is a Silicon Valley-based venture capital group that financed tech companies like Apple, Google, and Tesla during their early years.
The company stresses the importance of the location of household in the actual capacity utilization of their turbines. Houses and commercial buildings located near seashores will benefit most from their turbines.
It is very common to find many places in developing countries that have no electricity. AGI’s turbines might be the solution to eliminate the situation whereby people suffer to get electricity.
