If you are lost in the woods, need to get found as soon as possible and don’t have any devices on you to signal for help? You can utilize an acorn cap to make a loud whistle. You can of course also do this just for fun and it’s advisable to practice ahead of the time you might need to do this.

All you have to do is to find an oak tree and then an acorn cap that is in good condition – not damaged or split. Depending on whether or not the forest you are in has oak trees, this should either be easy or impossible…. so first find a good acorn cup (either attached to its acorn and in need of separation, or already separated.

Place your thumbs together and push the tips of your thumbs apart to make a V shape. Hold an acorn cap between your thumbs, with the cup facing upwards, so that the top edge of the cup runs across the V shape you made with your thumbs. Put your lips to your thumbs, with the upper lip above the top knuckle and the lower lip below it. Now blow – and make adjustments to your position until you make the whistle sound. Once you get it, you will find it easier to do it the next time. Remember, the larger the acorn cap the lower the pitch.

Of course there are other ways to get rescued if lost in the wilderness. You should not go looking for help until you are sure that no one is coming to rescue you because you may have rescuers looking for you and it will be easier for them to find if you remain in one place. If you do decide to look for help, do not relocate during nighttime. Do all of your search and travel during the day.
