The great outdoors is such a wonderful place but wilderness is also – thankfully – still home to various wild animals. There are inevitably situations in which our paths cross with wild animals and knowing what to do and what not to do is of paramount importance. Every creature is different and what calms one animal down might enrage another.



The video shows how you can survive attacks from the most common animals that you are most likely to encounter in the wild.

1. Coyotes. If a coyote approaches, don’t show fear. Stare a coyote right in the eyes and maintain eye contact. Throw rocks and other objects at the coyote and be loud.
2. Mountain lions. Don’t run and don’t crouch. Running stimulates their instinct to chase and crouching will make you look like a prey. Make eye contact and back away slowly.
3. Black Bears. Make yourself look big. Stand ground and make lots of noise.
4. Grizzly Bear. Perhaps one of the most terrifying of all. Play dead until the bear loses interest.
5. Moose. Run away and climb a tree.



Here are the five most common behaviors people were engaged in at the time of an animal attack so make sure to avoid / exercise caution with doing the following:

1. Parents or adults leaving children unattended
2. Walking a dog without a leash
3. Hunting or searching for a wounded animal
4. Engaging in outdoor activities at night or before dawn
5. Approaching a female carnivore with its young

Whether you’re worried about small or large predators, there is a lot you can do to lower your odds of being harmed by an animal while you are camping or hiking. Keep your camp clean, thoroughly wash all cooking utensils after use, seal uneaten food in airtight containers and don’t sleep in the same clothes you cooked dinner in because the smell of food can attract wild animals. Even after you do all that, be prepared for whatever might happen. Carrying defensive tools such as bells, pepper spray or a knife is always helpful.
