Growing your own vegetables is a very rewarding activity! Many fruits and vegetables are shipped across the world to fill the shelves in large stores, so supplying your own will reduce the need for all of that transportation and use of fossil fuels. Many folks say that home grown food tastes better and who am I to disagree? This is certainly true in my experience – if fruit is picked too early for shipping or storage, it won’t be able to ripen naturally as nature intended.
Eating your vegetables fresh from the garden means that the amount of vitamins will be at their highest possible levels – it has been proven that vitamin C levels will decrease with the length of time after picking.
This video gives a practical demonstration of seed planting and simple information that covers all of the basics – the methods shown here are clearly the result of plenty of experience and are ideal for beginners or for anyone who needs to check that they’re doing things right: choosing good size pots, the right growing meduim and good quality seeds, then providing enough moisture and light as they grow.
The importance of light is critical when growing from seed. If there isn’t enough light, the seedlings will grow long and “leggy”, which will make the plants weak and fragile; it’s their natural instinct to head towards the light – be sure to keep them under glass or clear plastic and move them outdoors only when it’s warm enough and not too windy.
For most of us growers, there will be too many seeds in a packet for just one year so here’s a quick tip for making your seeds last longer: you can put them in freezer bags and store them in the deep freeze – this will improve the germination rate and make them viable long after their “use by” date.
