Whenever you go hiking or camping, it’s important to bring a map with you and topographic maps are the most ideal. The primary purpose of a topographic map is to accurately represent the shape of the Earth’s surface – yet you need to know how to read it. Our featured video by Reality Survival will teach you how to read the terrain features on a typical topographical map.

This knowledge will help you plan your path.. and even stay hidden. You can plan your route across an area and avoid dangerous or difficult terrain, as well as plot the fastest or most inconspicuous course from A to B. You can also gain the advantage of identifying your position from the shape of the map’s contour lines, which show elevation and the shape of the terrain.

Here are a few things to remember:

1. Contour lines that form concentric rings represent hills or mountains.

2. The closer together the contour lines, the steeper the terrain.

3. Contour lines will typically form V-shaped patterns when they denote a river valley. The point of the V is oriented in the direction of the source of the water.

4. North might not always be “straight up” on a map. Make sure to check the compass rose on the map to be sure.

Get in the habit of taking a map with you even when traveling well known areas. This will help you become used to how terrain is represented, so that you can learn the skill of “translating” from a map to the visual appearance of the landscape. Map-reading is a vital skill for any backpacker or survivalist.
