Chances are you’ve noticed a trend in the dairy product section of your favorite supermarkets or health food stores. Bottles of fresh milk on one shelf and a couple of sour cream and cheese on a small section, but a hefty amount of space for a fermented milk product any health-conscious person with a taste for a tangy or sour but yummy treat is very familiar with: yogurt. Whether sweetened or flavored, strained, or mixed with fruit or fruit jam on the bottom, there are now innumerable delightful yogurt options to choose from. However, many of these products also contain other ingredients i.e. sugar which are not so healthful. Pure yogurt is what you should be seeking and you can always sweeten it with raw honey if desired.



Yogurt is a guilt-free indulgence that packs a punch when it comes to nutrition. Every spoonful of real yogurt brings with it a wide range of healthy and beneficial properties from the potassium, phosphorous, iodine, zinc, and vitamins B2, B5, and B12 that yogurt all contains. Yogurt is an excellent source of calcium and easy-to-digest protein too. That’s a delectably clever way of closing the nutrient gap without the discomfort from lactose intolerance! Compared to milk, yogurt is more digestible and some contain lactase, the enzyme lactose-intolerant individuals lack, and another enzyme that aids in the absorption of lactose. The culturing process breaks down lactose into forms that can be easily taken by the body. The lactic acid that results from the fermentation of lactose contributes to the digestion of milk calcium.

But that’s just the icing atop the cake. What makes yogurt an “A-lister” among the healthy foods expected to be in the fridge of those leading a wellness-oriented lifestyle is probiotics – active, “good bacteria” that, in sufficient number, can boost our immunity and help with digestion. Yogurt’s live cultures of bacteria can help maintain the balance of microflora in our intestines and regulate the number of opportunistic microorganisms that can possibly cause infection.

Anyone can enjoy the health benefits of yogurt by making their own version at home at half the cost of those sold in stores – and also, without the packaging waste! Technicalities aside, yogurt can be made by introducing bacteria culture into milk and letting the milk be incubated at a certain temperature until firm. Oh, and then you can add delicious organic fruit like the raspberries in our image. 🙂
