Choose what goes into your wine and avoid some of the nasty chemical additives that are often found in shop-bought wines. Have the perfect excuse for a walk outdoors with friends or family to gather your ingredients. Save a lot of money by brewing a large supply. “Don’t you need lots of kit to brew your own wine?” I hear you ask. Well, surprisingly there’s not that much you need and it can be used over and again for all sorts of different recipes. Wine can be made out of just about any fruit or vegetable; there are also some fantastic wines to try using flowers as well – elderflower and gorse flower are two of my favourites.
There’s only one disadvantage that I can think of – if your wine is too good it will disappear quickly so don’t forget, always drink moderately and safely! Some home-made wines can be stronger than you might think, especially those made with root vegetables. It will need a bit of patience when you start out as some wines are best kept for a few months or a year before drinking but once you’ve got going, there will be a constant supply (it’s a good idea to hide a few bottles so that you can discover them in a couple of years’ time – they can often be the best of all!).
