Throughout our lives, we’ve been exposed to many kinds of pollutants – from the air that we breathe, the places that we live in and sometimes from the food that we eat. Our hectic lifestyles can cause havoc to our health and it can get to the point that our bodies can no longer cope. Stress is inevitable and so it would be ideal to take something to help us adapt to this rapid changing lifestyle and environment.

Adaptogens are a fascinating phenomenon of nature. They are agents that are claimed to help an organism adapt to stress – assisting the stabilization of physiological processes and promoting homeostasis (balance). Note that the term adaptogen is still considered to be somewhat “fringe” – additional clinical and pre-clinical research will be required before it is accepted into canonized medical terminology. Eastern medicine is most noted for its advanced system of herbalism, which is still highly regarded today and has been claimed to be responsible for numerous “miracle cures”. Since ancient times, the orient has placed a high emphasis (in both cuisine and herbal medicine) on herbs which are now claimed as adaptogens, and holds them in high regard for health. Some examples of “adaptogenic herbs” are: Ginseng, Holy Basil, Licorice Root and Turmeric.

It should be noted that the modern scientific world habitually dismisses ancient and alternative traditions of herbalism – and only considers something as “medically proven” after an enormous amount of modern lab research. There are many positive studies for adaptogens – however as far as the orthodoxy is concerned, it might work, but more studies will be required before it will be accepted as conclusive.
