This video, from the Intense Angler channel, demonstrates how to create a “zero” alcohol stove. The materials are very inexpensive – a couple of aluminum cans – and a few simple household tools are required.
The stove is named the “zero” alcohol stove because it does not require any of the complicated parts that many stoves have. Zero jets, zero separate stands and zero inner core for this stove… If you want to make a lightweight, portable but also strong and reliable cooking stove then this project is perfect for you. When completed, this stove should boil water, cook meals and warm your food without any problems. And the best part? It will cost you almost nothing.
Aluminum is a good choice for several reasons: It’s lightweight, inexpensive and is thermally conductive, which aids in faster vaporization of the fuel. You can also modify the stove’s surface by painting it a dark color to increase the amount of radiant thermal energy captured by the stove’s body. Note that it is best suited to one or two people only as it becomes less efficient if used to cook larger meals.
For fuel, use pure alcohol such as denatured alcohol stove fuel or bio-ethanol. Read the label to be sure it is 100 percent denatured alcohol. Rubbing alcohol doesn’t burn well because it contains up to 30 percent or more water.
Before using, prepare a good spot for the stove. It should be on a flat, level surface away from anything that could catch fire. A large, flat stone such as slate or a concrete paving stone might be ideal. If putting it on the bare ground, choose a spot which does not have plant matter that could catch light.
The stove is primed by pouring about a teaspoonful of fuel into the middle of the stove. Allowing a little to splash over the rim holes may also assist with lighting. Do this BEFORE igniting and not while the stove is lit!
Warning: In sunlight, the flame from burning alcohol may be very hard to see. You might not be able to tell if the stove is lit even when it’s at full heat. Be very careful not to put either yourself or other flammable materials too close to the stove! As with any flammable materials and naked flame projects, take recommended safety precautions at all times. Also, this is an alcohol (ethanol) stove which means other types of liquid fuel should never be used and to attempt such might be extremely hazardous.
