Fire can be created through friction by rapidly grinding pieces of solid combustible material against each other. Successfully creating fire by friction involves skill, knowledge and most importantly patient effort. The fire starting method showed in the video is called fire plough and it is one of the simplest (and most ancient) ways to start a fire.

Before you start rubbing the sticks together, make sure you have a good tinder bundle ready for the coal. The tinder bundle is the key to effectively starting the fire once you’ve produced an ember. Dry grass, wood shavings, bark fibers and cattails all make great tinder.

Cut a groove in the softwood fireboard, then plough or rub the tip of a slightly harder shaft up and down the groove. Continually plough the tip of the stick at about a 45 degree angle, back and forth down the length of the board. The friction will push out dusty particles of the fireboard which will ignite as the temperature increases. Once the particles start to smolder, gradually add more tinder and blow gently to build up the fire.

This fire starting method can be used in hot as well as cold weather conditions. Once you are able to master this technique, you will be able to go through any survival situations.
