Raspberries are an easy fruit to grow! – they require very little maintenance and because they are perennial plants, there’s no need to replant every year. Fruits come in many colours as well as red – there are yellow, white and purple too! We’ve discovered a very informative post written by a gardener who has a lot of experience and clearly has a passion for raspberries! The link is after our comments and further tips.

There is good guidance here about growing, pruning, harvesting and storage. Soil and climate conditions will affect your choice of varieties although much of the European climate is suitable. In the US, there is the USDA map to help with finding the right plants – this page will give advice for your area: http://www.berriesunlimited.com/usda-zone-map/info_6.html

For some extra info on staking and tying up your canes, here’s another page with all you need to know and some useful tips on mulching: http://www.canadiangardening.com/gardens/fruit-and-vegetable-gardening/caring-for-raspberry-canes/a/1307

Soft fruits often have a short harvesting season, usually only a few weeks of the year. They do not last long once they are ripe, either on the plant or after being picked. This means that you will have to eat them quickly (not usually a problem!), sell or exchange some of your crop or find a way to store them for use throughout the year.

Freezing berries is easy to do and will preserve them for up to a year – this method will also keep valuable vitamin and nutrient levels high, apart from vitamin C, which will be reduced by around half. They should be laid out dry on a tray (washing them can cause them to spoil more quickly) and then frozen, before being transferred to a sealed container to go back in the freezer – this prevents them bruising or sticking together.

Other preservation methods include making jam or jelly and bottling with syrup – these stores can last for several years if you can resist them! Another page from “commonsensehome” will give you full instructions for preserving and a lot of well-researched details about the health benefits of eating raspberries – did you know that they are very high in anti-oxidants and have shown anti-cancer activity? http://www.commonsensehome.com/tag/how-to-store-raspberries/

As you can see, there are many reasons to make room for this fantastic fruit in your garden. The leaves are widely used to make a medicinal tea, useful for pregnant mothers – advisedly and only in the last month of pregnancy – but there are other benefits too! Here’s some further reading:

😳 What Tinnitus Does To Your Brain Cells (And How To Stop It)

After 47 years of studies and countless brain scans done on more than 2,400 tinnitus patients, scientists at the MIT Institute found that in a shocking 96% of cases, tinnitus was actually shrinking their brain cells.

As it turns out, tinnitus and brain health are strongly linked.

Even more interesting: The reason why top army officials are not deaf after decades of hearing machine guns, bombs going off and helicopter noises…

Is because they are using something called "the wire method", a simple protocol inspired by a classified surgery on deaf people from the 1950s...
