Here’s a very cool short video – it will take less than two minutes of your time to watch – and it’s one of those that, once you’ve seen it, you’ll never forget.

This is a simple trick that could prove useful not only in the most extreme survival situation but if you’re out in the woods, on a boat or on a road trip – you can even use it in your own back garden (though it would probably be easier to go and get a knife) – it looks like fun to do!

You might think that in most situations where you need to cut a rope – for example when climbing, sailing or camping – most people would have either a knife or a lighter to hand. That may not always be the case: For example, what would you do if an arm or leg is caught up in the rope and the cutting tool out of reach?

If you have the choice (and no knife etc), cut the rope with a thinner rope or string because it tends to be quicker. Lighters can be used to cut thinner ropes made with synthetic materials, this method has the advantage of leaving the cut ends melted so that they don’t fray. Be careful, as melted plastic can burn and stick to your skin – take it from me, these kind of burns are very painful! A flame will work for natural materials too but you may find that the cord keeps smouldering after it’s burned through. Once learned, this method could be used for all sorts of things – baling twine, fishing line, even those super-tough plastic packing straps.

It’s very important to know that any piece of rope you use to cut another one in this way will be weaker afterwards. So for safety reasons, especially for climbing ropes, it’s only to be used in an emergency or using a rope that will not be used later in a critical application.
