Referred to as “cargo-tecture”, this type of design is a great way to utilize materials currently gathering dust in your storage unit, such as unwanted or unused furniture. What’s more: Used shipping containers / cargo containers are relatively inexpensive in and around port cities, making them relatively easy to acquire.
The presenters of this video show us how they built a livable and safe home out of a shipping container – using recycled and reclaimed materials. Many great tips and little-known, yet surprisingly simple techniques for this type of green building are revealed.
In the video, we learn that building a home out of a shipping container is a great way to maximize space and avoid paying utility bills entirely! What could be better than that? We were also excited to learn that shipping container homes are surprisingly durable living spaces when built properly. Also, they can be equipped with bathrooms and kitchenettes, bedrooms and common areas. In terms of interior design, the possibilities are endless because being steel, you can drill and attach easily! In the video, the presenters give us a tour of each room and amenity– and we were amazed and inspired to that the overall quality was just like that of a furnished apartment or flat, with plenty of open space and picturesque window installments. The bathroom was especially impressive and goes to show just how endless the possibilities are. As described in the video, it resembled a Japanese spa. Essentially a “wet room” or “large shower” rather than a “bathroom”, it utilizes the full potential of the space.
The sustainability factor of a converted shipping container home is profound. We are excited to report that only recycled or reused materials were used to build the home featured in this video. One particularly notable feature is the plywood walls, which are reused bleachers from a local high school! Other features, such as the kitchen counter and backsplash in the bathroom, were reused materials that the video presenters had in their homes! Another cool feature is the bedroom, which is essentially a bed “nook” because, as mentioned by one of the presenters in the video, rarely does one spend more than a few hours of their waking life in their bedroom. In other words, bed nooks are a great alternative because they allow more space for the common areas of the house and thus further maximize the potential of the home.
Converting a shipping container into a home is an amazing way to access the “mortgage-free” lifestyle. They are capable of being powered entirely by solar and reclaimed rainwater. However one tip – don’t think about burying them or putting a thick layer of dirt on top for a green roof – as they are not designed to take that kind of a load without some kind of additional structural support.
