Is it possible to construct a tiny house in the middle of nowhere that has its own solar power system for $2,000? The answer is a big YES!

Expense is probably one of the biggest concerns that you will often hear about when building an off grid cabin. Many people often lament about the materials and labor costs to be incurred when erecting such a structure. It’s all relative – and relative to a mortgage and being a slave to the bank, a tiny house is cheap, right? No. Some tiny houses can even cost upwards of $50,000.

An article published by the website offgridworld.com back in December 2013 discusses how a 400 square-foot cabin was built for $2000. The tiny house sources its electricity from a 570-watt solar and wind power system. Owned by Lamar Alexander, the off-grid cabin has a full loft, kitchen, a bathroom, and dining and living areas. The house has a large bedroom and office upstairs.

Small cabins require scaled-down power needs, and off-grid solar systems are specifically designed for them. Off-grid systems make all the electricity necessary for your home. There are various custom designed off-grid solar power systems available in the market. Those 560-Watt solar panels are ideal for off-grid cabin systems.

LaMar was forced to find a new way of living after a sudden illness and divorce found himself homeless and broke. He used to have a teaching career, a big house, and a nice car. With $200 left to his name, an old truck, camper, and a small piece of property, he started his life over again.

He had part-time work for two years and had saved $2000 which he used to build a 14×4 off-grid cabin. His building process was pretty straightforward and made good use of recycled materials. An old trailer provided the materials for the windows and doors while recycled cedar fence boards and cheap green lumber were used for the trim and porch, respectively. Additional roof strength comes from a modified post and beam structure which can deal with snow load.

The cabin’s sink, shower, lights, water pump, propane system, and solar electric system all came from his camper where he lived for two years before going off-grid. An old septic tank in the property didn’t go wasted and was utilized for a solar assisted composting toilet system that he designed.

Lamar wanted to share his knowledge so he created a website which offers information on step-by-step instructions, videos, and more projects. The website is located at www.simplesolarhomesteading.com. He also published an eBook “Ultimate Off-Grid Guide” which is for people who want to build sustainable homesteads and inexpensive houses.
