A rocket stove is an elegant-yet-simple stove design that generates high temperatures, with near-complete combustion of fuel. It does this by means of an enclosed chamber with a vertical chimney, which creates a strong convection effect or “draw”. This movement of air achieves a similar effect to that gained when a person blows on a fire.

Another benefit of the rocket stove principle is that it achieves high efficiency, with much more of the heat being focused towards the cooking surface than if a simple open flame was used.

There are numerous rocket stove designs on the market, however this super off-grid tutorial will teach you how to make your own using 16 bricks – with a cost of either a few dollars or for free if the bricks are lying around already! There are many things about this design that are fantastic – bricks are readily available in many places – and also they form a stable, sturdy surface which lends itself well to sitting a cooking pot on top.
