So often we find ourselves looking forward to following a new recipe only to find that there’s a key ingredient or two that are missing from our cupboards! If you have to make an extra trip to the store, by which time your mealtime schedule has gone out of the window, or you have to cook something else that could leave you and your family disappointed, you’ll wish you had never announced your intention to try something new! – now there’s no reason to despair with this really helpful guide to kitchen substitutions!
Being a good cook sometimes means learning how to improvise with what’s available but without a lot of knowledge and experience of what works, disaster can strike… these simple tips will give you a head start and could give you the confidence to experiment a bit more – you might even make some new discoveries to add to the list!
Another good reason for broadening your knowledge is that certain ingredients are either expensive or come in large containers so if you buy them specially for one recipe, they may end up not being used again for a long time, only to be found years later at the back of the cupboard when they’re too old to use! – if they can be substituted for something more commonly used, it will save both money and wasted food.
A quick note of caution though: it’s usually a good idea to keep the majority of ingredients the same in any recipe – one or two substitutions may work fine but any more than that could result in something too different from your intended dish.
