Here’s a neat little life hack that everyone should know. It’s a way of using the top of a plastic bottle to seal a food storage bag. One of the advantages of this method of sealing a bag is that it creates a very good seal – keeping stored items from spilling and preventing insects or moisture from getting in. The bag can also be opened and closed numerous times and another advantage is that you can pour from the bag easily with the round form of the bottle top making an excellent spout. This technique also works for larger bags of rice – sealing them when not needed and enabling them to be poured out nicely when needed.

This is essentially a zero-waste technique – because the discarded part of the bottle can be either re-used for something or recycled, and the top that you used for your project can be recycled when you no longer have use for it.

This life hack is also an upcycling technique. Upcycling is the art of making a low-value item into a higher value item. Typically using waste items, upcycling uses them as a cheap or free material to create new things from. One of the best examples of upcycling is that performed in the construction of an Earthship house. Earthships use old tires rammed full of earth as a wall construction material – and while this sounds a little strange it is actually amazingly effective: There are mountains of discarded tires out there, and the technique can be used inexpensively to create extremely thick walls with very high thermal mass – providing superb thermal stability for the home; keeping it cool in summer and warm in winter. Earthships also use glass bottles as a wall material that lets light through.

Different food storage techniques have their pros and cons. For survivalist use, this is pretty good. Glass jars such as Kilner jars are excellent for preserving food – and the non-leaching nature of glass means that the food will keep a fresh taste. However in an earthquake or similar situation, glass containers could all shatter, leaving the food unusable even if you could gather it up – due to the risk of small fragments of glass being inside it.

Preppers often highlight the need to store food in containers that can survive impact, flood or other scenarios. Numerous of these bags stored inside one of the sturdy, stackable totes or large ammo cans might provide a useful survival supply.
