Here’s a superb documentary which interviews several people who have gone “full time RV” – moving out of a regular house and living in a motorhome or other vehicle. This is a fascinating topic and for someone who is serious about going off grid, will give insight into the views and motivations behind making the switch.
One of the things that’s awesome about this video is that it showcases people who have gone their own way and “stuck it to the man”. It reveals that going full time RV is often done for some very good reasons and has some deep philosophy behind it. The principal among these reasons is freedom. Living a “normal” life which involves getting a big mortgage will typically require 30 years of commitment to working full time in order to pay it off. Owning a house is also a very heavily consumerist lifestyle – not only in terms of the bills but in terms of the sheer quantity of materials used in building and maintaining a big home. RV living is low impact by comparison.
Other benefits of the RV life include being able to just roll if you don’t like where you are. Fed up with the neighbors? No problem. Area become unpleasant in some way? No problem. Forest fire approaching? No problem. You get the picture?
Financially – full time RV living can truly be a lifestyle of freedom. If you have or can create work that can either be done online or have some other kind of mobile trade, so that you can still earn a decent income, it can literally turn your finances around. You could save thousands per month and even retire early.
When you purchase a house, the typical 30-year fixed rate mortgage will require that you ultimately end up paying back around double what you borrowed, if you let it stretch out to the full 30 year term. You are literally working for the bank and will end up handing over perhaps $300,000 over 30 years just in interest – just for the ability to have a roof over your head. Buying an RV eliminates all that and it’s much more financially attainable.
The flipside of course is that buying a house does enable you to build an asset which can grow in value over time. But you sure pay for it in terms of ongoing maintenance, interest, property taxes and so on. It might seem like you can sell for a profit but when all the bills are subtracted and the years of toil taken into consideration? RV might be your best bet.
I leave you with a thought provoking quote from one of the comments: “I thought it was me just me, after ten years in a home with all the headaches and soul pumping maintenance, I realised corporations invented that fake American Dream crap for profits and stability to keep their pockets lined. Freedom should be just that, what you want, not something sold from a Damn TV.”
