This video gives us a great demonstration of how to build raised beds for vegetable gardens – using freely available wood from shipping pallets. There are a few videos out there on this topic but we’ve picked one of the really good ones….

Raised bed gardens have several advantages including better drainage, accessibility and space utilization. However if you were to use all new lumber, it could get expensive. Also, if you were to use pressure treated lumber, it has toxic chemicals in it that could possibly affect your produce.

Millions of pallets are discarded every year and they can often be obtained free just by asking businesses if they have any available. Try the industrial / business area of town, you could also probably find some via Craigslist or Freecycle ads.

One of the tips that is valuable here is to choose pallets that are exactly the same size – as there are some size variations out there. This will make things easier when it comes to assembling the finished item. The presenter also goes into detail on techniques to fill the gaps and make sure that your soil doesn’t wash out through the cracks when it rains.

Notes and concerns:

1) One concern I had was that the timbers would rot after perhaps a couple of seasons. Replacement is of course inexpensive but time consuming. One option would be to paint the finished bed with a primer or other sealant prior to filling with soil.

2) Some pallets are chemically treated to make them insect resistant. You might not want this leaching out into your soil. Look for the ones that are stamped “HT” (Heat Treated) to show that they were kiln dried as opposed to chemical treated. Also, being an industrial product, any pallets may have been treated with formaldehyde during manufacture. Again, painting with a primer should lock in anything that’s in the wood.
