This video shows how you can make a double barrel woodstove for under a hundred bucks! It is extremely effective at producing heat for a large area which makes it a perfect “low tech” solution for any house during the fall and winter season.

The main component for this stove is a 55-gallon drum. This will really kick out some serious heat when it gets going – but you can use only one but if you are want to produce heat for a large house then it is recommended that you use two drums. The double barrel set-up emits twice the heat at the same amount of wood.

The guy in the video purchased a pre-made kit manufactured by vogelzang but he made some alterations to make it even more effective – for example installing a pipe for additional air supply. You only need a two-inch threaded nipple, nut and bolt preferably stainless steel, spring and a damper. He installed it in the bottom barrel where most of the heat production takes place thus where air control is more needed.

Another clever modification is the installation of the small pipe to the bottom barrel which drops motor oil into the fire to increase the heat and to keep the wood burning for a longer amount of time. Now I’m not sure quite how eco-friendly this is and how it will affect the smoke – so I would not do this, personally. You would also have to clean the pipe from time to time as the oil will eventually gum up and clog it. Another safety reminder: place the motor oil can as far away from the stove as possible.

Two things to remember before using the stove: One is to “burn it in” first outside before bringing it in the house – to get rid of any chemical residue from the paint / surface treatments of the steel. Those chemicals are harmful if inhaled in large amounts. Next is you should place the stove three feet from any combustible surface but this can be remedied by placing two concrete masonite between the stove and the surface.

Another thing to note is that such fire barrels will most likely not be as durable as a professionally made woodstove; owing to the fact that thinner steel is used and it will rust through more rapidly.

The kit comes with instructions on how to install it. You can make changes to make it work best for you and it does not really need any special skills but I recommend some basic knowledge about metal work.
