Soil sustains life by helping plants to grow. Without it, there would be nowhere to grow food that is the sustenance of life. Healthy soil, like people, should have a balanced combination of elements and microorganisms. Each of these plays an important role in the various processes of your plant. The best way to have good soil is to develop and enrich it using various components and the video discusses these components in detail.

Keep in mind that soil is in fact not just a “chemical balance sheet” but is a living ecosystem composed of weathered rock, water, air and innumerable small organisms. However, organic matter, aka “humus”, is considered to be the most important element that soil should have. Organic matter can be almost anything containing biomass – for example lawn mowings, branches, moss, sawdust, leaves, stems, manure, algae, insects, lichens, kitchen scraps and earthworms. Organic matter is also the key to good water retention and it absorbs and stores nutrients. Adding the above items to your soil, ideally already well-compost, will increase its fertility.

Avoid using chemicals that create an imbalance in the soil. These chemicals may kill off unwanted pests, but in the long run, they may ultimately destroy living organisms that are essential to the creation of healthy soil. Applying killing agents to a living system is not a way to bring it back into balance, it is a way to wreak further havoc. It’s a terrible tragedy that this simple but very accurate soil science has been largely forgotten in the age of “agribusiness”.

It’s important to lay out your garden’s “ground plan” well. Narrow planting beds will mean they can be reached from either side at harvest time and designated paths will prevent topsoil from becoming compacted and crops from being damaged.

Lastly, try not to work the soil when it is very wet because this can break up the soil’s structure and turn it to liquid mud, which will dry out like hard clay. Make a small ball of dirt in your hands and compact it together, then flick it. If the ball falls apart, it’s good to go but if it doesn’t, then it’s too wet.
