The tutorial takes the form of an interview with Rob Harlan, who is a California-based contractor with a long history of working with solar systems. This is a really informative page and an awesome place to start if you’re interested in building or installing a solar water heater in your own home!

Utilities are becoming more and more expensive in recent years – there are sources of power that we could harness to save ourselves money and reduce the use of non-renewable fuels to produce our energy. Water has a high Specific Heat Capacity, which means that it uses a lot of energy to heat up so this makes it an ideal choice for an alternative method to give the largest savings!

Many of these systems have been around for decades and the simplest version for over a century! Solar water heaters are becoming more popular across the world, which means that the components and systems are now more affordable. Hawaii is leading the way by making it compulsory to install a solar water heater in every new home!

The principle of solar water heating is very simple – the water circulates through a series of tubes that are enclosed in a solar collector. All of the areas that are exposed to the sun’s rays are painted black to allow for the maximum heat absorption and a well-insulated storage tank is crucial to keep the system as efficient as possible.

Most solar heaters use the basic process of thermosiphoning or convection, so as the water heats up it expands and becomes lighter, moving to the top of the system and then it is replaced with colder water from below – this means that there is no need to use a pump to circulate the water!

It’s important to study the different options as their suitability depends on your local climate – if you have freezing temperatures and not many sunny days, this will restrict your choice of design and will require a more complex system but surprisingly an “evacuated tube collector” could still be a very cost-effective option. If you have the skills to build a system from scratch, this will save the most money but it’s also easy to source ready made units as well.
