We’re happy to be able to pass on these simple, effective recipes for greening up your household cleaning jobs! The link follows after our introduction. Commercial cleaning products that use powerful, non-biodegradable chemicals are readily available these days but when it comes to finding eco-friendly alternatives it’s not quite so easy – if and when we do find them, the prices are often much higher.

It can be hard to reverse the common belief that we need new, ultra-intense chemical products to be able to clean our homes properly – many of us have been exposed to the advertising since we were children! A closer look at some of the ingredients will soon force us to think again. The good news is that we can now make responsible choices without the extra cost and still get the job done!

Admittedly, some chemical cleaning products take a bit less elbow grease to use but the residues will continue to affect health and the environment for many years – a lot of these chemicals are recent inventions and the outcome of long-term exposure is impossible to predict or measure. There are risks with some chemicals of mutagenic effects (ie causing genetic mutation) – enough to send shivers down the spine!

The following article gives a lot of good information and, although the viewpoint of the writer is quite extreme, there are still so many reasons here for us to think carefully about our choice of household products:

We found an article from the US Environmental Protection Agency that highlights many household chemicals and their adverse affects on health and the environment. Their site has a great deal of well-researched information and makes interesting reading – there is a lot of info to help companies and their purchasing executives to make “environmentally preferable” choices, here are the relevant links:

Borax is a chemical that occurs naturally – it is widely used and often considered a “green” alternative, one of the tutorial recipes includes it. I find it strange that a toxic chemical can be called “green” just because it is less harmful than other toxic chemicals! The following report will tell you more:

Washing Soda is another useful product that will help to reduce your use of detergents. Please try this link for more details: http://www.rejoiceinlife.com/recipes/washSoda.php

Now that you’re better informed, it’s time to fetch the rubber gloves and put together some green cleaners of your own!
