Millions of gallons of pesticides are used worldwide – however despite the assurances of the companies, these things kill bugs stone cold, so how can they really be fine for us? These substances end up in the soil, waterways and absorbed into conventionally grown produce.

One of the great problems is that the long-term effects of low level toxicity are not really known. With such a chemical cocktail surrounding and entering us, how can we be sure which of the chemicals is harming us? Side effects of some pesticides are thought to include cancer, neurological complications, reproductive effects and impaired fertility. It’s a really alarmng thought, but thankfully The Environmental Protection Agency has restricted the use of some of the most toxic pesticides. [1] However, we still have to make sure that what we’re eating is safe, and the simplest way is to minimize exposure. Why take the chance?



There are some fruits and vegetables that have been found by scientists to absorb these chemicals more than others and they have become known as the Dirty Dozen. These are considered some of the most important ones to buy organic form the point of view of avoiding pesticides. Here’s the list:

1. Apples
2. Celery
3. Cherry Tomatoes
4. Cucumbers
5. Grapes
6. Hot Peppers
7. Nectarines
8. Peaches
9. Potatoes
10. Spinach
11. Strawberries
12. Sweet Bell Peppers

Plus:



1. Kale/Collard Greens
2. Summer Squash

Keep in mind that almost all of these fruits and vegetables are eaten raw, so it’s very important that you wash them thoroughly before eating. There are fruit and vegetable washes that are being sold in the market right now but you can also make use of your own concoction. Just mix equal parts of vinegar (white or ACV) and water. For soft-skinned fruits and vegetables, you have to soak them for a few minutes before rinsing them off with water. The acetic acid in the vinegar will also help kill the bacteria and it also helps break down the wax and the pesticides. This solution is way cheaper than the ones that are sold in the market.

Thankfully, many people have become more aware of the artificial methods of controlling pests. Going organic is the easiest way to stay away from the health hazards of pesticides. Try planting your own fruits and vegetables in the garden and adopt organic farming methods like companion planting (close planting of different plants to protect each other from pests).
