We discovered a great guide that provides clear photos for identifying edible wild plants, with tips on what to avoid and a lot of useful information about each plant featured! It’s good to know that there are plenty of possible sources of food around in a survival situation. Of course, you don’t have to wait for an emergency to start eating wild plants – I’m sure that many gardeners would gain some extra satisfaction from being able to eat some of their “weeds“!

Here’s an extra one to add to the list: One of the most important wild food plants is the very nutritious stinging nettle (Urtica Dioica). It is rich in vitamin C and all of the B vitamins – it also provides a good dose of minerals, especially silica to help the tissues of the body to heal.

Young nettle shoots can be eaten as a vegetable after boiling (which removes the stings!) – springtime is the best time to harvest them and it’s great way to give the body a healthy boost after winter. It’s well known that nettle stings on the skin can be relieved by the juice of the common dock plant but did you know that juice from nettle plants works too?

Our ancestors relied on berries, nuts, fungi and wild plants to provide most of their food and medicines and some indigenous people still do! Adding a few edible wild plants to your diet will make meals more interesting and could contribute to a healthier balance of nutrition. It’s of course essential to know what not to eat! – This will help: http://www.livescience.com/11356-top-10-poisonous-plants.html

If you want to make the most of foraging, it’s a good idea to pick up a good pocket field guide and carry it with you when out hiking. This is a good incentive to walk more often and you will learn a lot about the natural world as you go along before coming home to feast on what you’ve gathered!

Note: There is an important rule to follow here: If you are not 100 percent certain of a plant’s identity, then don’t eat it. Having said that, there are many more edible plants out there – if you’re looking for a more comprehensive guide or some further info, please try one of the following:
