One of the really great things about these homemade soap recipes is the variety in fragrances. Some of these, such as the pumpkin vanilla spice, sound so delicious that I’m almost wondering if they are edible! Of course they aren’t – but they might make you smell delicious.

Another of the things that we really like about these tutorials is the prevalence of natural ingredients. There are all kinds of herbs and other natural ingredients known for their healthful qualities in these soaps. This is important knowledge in our opinion – there has been so much bad press about petrochemical ingredients in cosmetic products that many people are greatly concerned over the potential risks that may be associated with them.

Plus, there is some vagueness in ingredients in mainstream products: You don’t know exactly what’s in it. Often you will see in the ingredients vague terms such as “fragrance”. This is the beauty products’ equivalent of the term “flavoring” used in food. It doesn’t actually tell you what’s in it – as there are hundreds of synthetic ingredients that could be included in the fragrance – and the long-term effects of many of these are simply unknown – even if we were aware of what was in them. Although herbs are often considered “unscientifically tested” by the mainstream, bear in mind the fact that they have been in use for thousands of years – our bodies are attuned to them and we have a pretty good idea of how they are going to affect us.

Safety note: There is a safety aspect of soap-making that needs to be known – some soap recipes require the use of lye, which is a caustic ingredient that absolutely needs proper safe handling procedures. Please bear this in mind and be aware of the fact that such ingredients should be regarded as “adults only”.
